Reservation: Earlier vs Now

What is Reservation

Reservation is a very common term. It is a provision in our constitution provided for the upliftment of backward classes. This provision reserves a fixed number of seats in government jobs and schools for backward classes namely Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST) and Other Backward Classes (OBC). This is a definition which we read in books and learn at schools. But currently, the scenario is very different. Nowadays reservation is merely a provision, it's rather a political stunt.

Why and For How Many Years Was Reservation To Be There?

The provision of reservation was given in the constitution because at the time of framing of constitution some castes were very deprived and suppressed by other sections of society. So, to allow them to uplift themselves and encourage them to study and get jobs, reservations were provided to SC and ST in government jobs for 10 years. After few years OBC were also provided reservation. After 10 years, when it was surveyed, still a large fraction of the population was backward. The time period of reservation was then increased by 10 more years and it kept on increasing. That's why it is still there.

What and Why is Reservation in the Current Scenario?

Earlier, the reservation was for the suppressed and deprived sections of the society, which were underprivileged, uneducated, poor and had lack of resources. Nowadays, many people whose family are not poor and are very privileged and have enough resources are also availing reservation. This is just because they belong to a backward caste. This creates one problem. Those people who are legitimately underprivileged and have lack of resources are unable to get an opportunity. Due to this only a few people who belong to backward class and are privileged (because any one of the members must have got the benefit of reservation) can get the advantage of reservation. If I talk about my self, I belong to a backward class. To be more precise, I belong to OBC, but as I know that I belong to a privileged family and have enough resources I have not availed reservation and thus belong to the general class. I want that everyone must have this thought in their mind that is they are privileged they must not avail reservation even if they belong to a reserved class.

It has also become a great means of gaining votes for politicians. Politicians keep citing about the reservation and tell that they would let reservation continue if they get elected. Due to this majority of people vote them. Due to this undeserving leaders get elected and good leaders are left behind. If we observe, more than 50% of seats are reserved in government jobs and only a small fraction of seats are left for general class. If any politician even wants to remove the reservation from our democratic system, then also he would not remove it due to the fear of losing the post of leadership. From this, we can understand that nowadays reservation is being misused more than being used.

Current Reservation in India is as follows:

My Views on Reservation

If I tell about my views, I am against the current system of reservation and would want a different type of reservation system.
  1. First and the foremost thing is that percentage of seats reserved must be decreased to at least 50% so that worthies in general class can also get the opportunity.
  2. Second is, Instead of caste-based reservation there should be reservation based on the economical status of a person's family because nowadays even people from so-called backward classes are also economically stable.
By doing this people who are genuinely under-privileged and have lack of resources can get an opportunity to rise in the world.

Some quotes by famous personalities are:
“Yes, we have to seek redemption! Redemption from the divisive politics based on caste and religion, redemption from the corruption which is eating our lives like termites, redemption from misery of poverty, redemption from the sins of our venal politicians. We need good governance and accountability. An individual has to fight for the things he rightfully deserves. People do not need crutches of any kind if the basic conditions of nation are conducive to their growth. It’s ridiculous; people are first deprived of basic amenities, denied their dues and then offered carrots to benefit the vote bank politics.”
― Madhu Vajpayee,

“When I trust someone I do it without doubt or fear or reservation. And then I work on a Plan B.”
― Joyce Rachelle
